Journal writing
I want students to be writing independently en Français. Students can all provide excellent assignments using spell check, online dictionaries, online grammar review... but can you write clearly and effectively independently? That's why we have been engaging in active reflective practices through journal writing, reflective writing, free writing, critiquing, essay writing, book reports and project assignments.
Students can keep a daily journal in French. Just a paragraph or two about any topic you would like to write about.
Free writes
Once a week, students can do a free write for 10 min. Students plan their writing with a topic brainstorm for 5 min, listing all the things known about the chosen topic. Then write for 10 minutes. After, re-read and edit so see what can be improved on next time.
Rédaction/ Essay writing
Students have been practicing writing 4 paragraph essays. Choose a topic, brainstorm and categorize two aspects of the topic to write about. The format used is Introduction, 2 paragraph body and conclusion.
We have also worked on effective paragraph structure that begins with an opening sentence/thesis/topic sentence and the paragraph follows the lead... about 5 sentences is a good grade 7 minimum for paragraph writing.
Now students have done some independent writing and can review the work with spell check in Word and with BonPatron. BonPatron is an online grammar and spell check tool that highlights possible errors to check and errors to modify, colour categorizes them by spelling or grammar and gives suggestions. This way students can identify frequent errors! It’s not fool-proof and doesn’t replace effective sentence structure, but it is a great tool.
Reading
Students can read a variety of books independently of their choice fiction and non-fiction. There are many online sites and audible even has many books you can listen to online. Below are some great resources with activities, topics, articles and videos students can use for independent writing.

Remember to conjugate your verbs! I have uploaded some grammar lessons in the PDF file below.
